American Katerra (AKL) is pleased to be joining the ranks of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The announcement of this milestone is a notable step forward in our commitment to pioneering innovative, sustainable steel and other high-quality solutions from which we can build. With a passion for modular and off-site construction, becoming part of AISC complements our vision to provide the right choice for building projects that will meet our customers’ high tolerance demand and demand.

In this article, we will explain the nature of AISC as well as some of the big advantages of membership to AKL and our customers.

What is the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)?

Founded in 1921, the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) is a not-for-profit technical institute and trade association in the United States. Based in Chicago, AISC is the national voice of the steel business in the steel industry, and represents architects, engineers, and contractors, as well as other construction agencies, as the face of AEC. AISC seeks to encourage the use of structural steel by establishing standards of workmanship and product features that are both safe, inexpensive, and innovative, through the establishment of the use of structural materials. They drive advances to make steel the most cost-effective, sustainable, and resilient structural material available.
Key activities include:

  • Standards & Codes:
The AISC provides essential materials, such as: the AISC Steel Construction Manual, the Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, and the Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges. These documents set the standards for design, fabrication, and erection of steel structures.
  • Education and Training:
Delivering seminars, webinars and conferences (e.g., the annual NASCC: The Steel Conference), and certification programs to ensure individuals remain on the cutting edge of industry best practices.
  • Research and Innovation:
Funds research and initiatives that improve steel performance in areas like sustainability, seismic resistance and fire protection.
  • Advocacy and Networking:
Supporting the policy discussion and networking among members to address issues.

AISC is the home of over 1,000 member companies and professionals who play a central role in ensuring steel stays the most preferable choice for modern construction, with an emphasis on quality, safety, and environmental responsibility.

We Have AISC Membership Benefits for American Katerra

Membership in AISC does not mean affiliation; it means having access to resources and opportunities that directly support our operations, expertise, and customers’ value. This membership benefits AKL in the following ways:

Access to Existing Products and Standards:

As members, we receive access to AISC’s extensive resources and standards library on demand, including the most current 16th Edition Steel Construction Manual. We recently purchased a print version of this key benchmark, with new layouts for the 2022 AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, updated design tables for different connections, as well as new information on the chevron effect, wrap-around gusset plates, and hundreds of other shapes. This guarantees our teams have access to the latest codes and specifications which allows them to build projects in an environment where standards are being met or exceeded when it comes to safety and efficiency.

Professional Development and Training Opportunities:

AISC provides excellent discounts on seminars, webinars, and conferences. For AKL, we have engineers, fabricators and project managers who can undertake continuous professional development for low costs and achieve professional development hours (PDHs) at the same time as progressing in the trend of steel innovation. This dedication to our people results in enhanced products for our clients.

Improved Quality Assurance and Certification Options:

Enrolling us in quality assurance certifying processes and certification programmes that allow us to measure quality improvements accurately against the very high quality standards of AISC. Being AISC certified shows our ongoing efforts in code compliance, training and fabrication and erection practice. Not only does that raise our internal standard but it also helps our clients as well—when our clients consider that we are partnering with a company which has nothing but excellence as our guiding principles.

Networking and Collaboration:

Joining AISC enables us to enter a network of industry leaders such as fabricators, erectors, and suppliers. It thus supports the formation of partnerships that help achieve novel ideas, knowledge transfer and innovative business opportunities. For AKL, it means that deeper relationships in the steel ecosystem can also serve us better with more difficult tasks.

Advocate for Sustainability and Resilience:

AISC tries to make steel a sustainable material, which is in accordance with AKL’s eco modular construction approach. Membership informs research on low-carbon steel production and resilient designs, allowing us to minimize our environmental impact and provide greener alternatives to our customers.

Altogether, AISC membership supports AKL as it works to enhance our steel projects, from skyscrapers to plant and buildings that will make sure they are constructed faster, safe and more sustainably.
