BIM Steel Detailing Services

Structural Steel Fabrication

Finding a structural steel fabricator is rarely the hard part. Finding one that holds tolerances, documents its quality, and protects your erection schedule is. American Katerra provides structural steel fabrication services from San Antonio, Texas, as the U.S. subsidiary of Yamaguchi Heavy Industries Ltd., pairing Japanese engineering discipline with on-the-ground execution for U.S. construction and industrial projects.

Every order runs through a fully digital, BIM-driven workflow built in Tekla, with quality checkpoints documented at each stage. If you are pricing a project now, request a fabrication quote and you will receive an itemized proposal with a dated production schedule.

Structural Steel Fabrication

Expertise You Can Trust

Our scope covers the structural steel package from detailing through delivery, and the documentation comes from the same model and procurement records that produce your steel.

Structural Steel Fabrication

We fabricate primary and secondary structural members: beams, columns, braces, trusses, girts and purlins, moment and shear connections, base plates, and embeds, produced to your drawings, specifications, and the applicable AISC provisions. Piece marking follows the erection drawings so field crews can stage and set efficiently.

Steel Detailing and BIM Coordination

Our detailers build the connection-level model in Tekla and generate shop and erection drawings directly from it. We participate in BIM coordination with your design team, flag constructability issues during detailing, and manage the RFI and approval cycle. Learn more about our BIM workflow.

Steel Supply Chain Management

We manage procurement against your construction schedule, place mill orders to the specified grades and sections, and maintain traceability with mill test reports tied to heat numbers. Our supply chain management approach surfaces material risk before it becomes schedule risk.

Sustainability Documentation

For owners and design teams with LEED, ESG, or corporate carbon commitments, we provide Life Cycle Assessment of fabricated steel and Greenhouse Gas reporting on the supply chain behind it, generated from the same data used to build your steel.

Green & Blue Carbon Steel™

Our trademarked Green & Blue Carbon Steel™ program supplies lower-carbon steel options and quantifies the reduction against conventional supply, a documented path to cut embodied carbon without redesigning the structure.

Our Structural Steel Fabrication Process

Our scope covers the structural steel package from detailing through delivery, and the documentation comes from the same model and procurement records that produce your steel.

Step1

Design review and estimating

We flag constructability issues and long-lead items, then return an itemized quote with a dated production schedule and stated exclusions.

Step2

Detailing and approvals

Shop and erection drawings come directly from the Tekla model, and RFIs resolve discrepancies before material is cut.

Step3

Material procurement

Orders go out to the specified grades and sections with mill test reports matched to heat numbers.

Step4

Cutting, fitting, and welding

In-process checks on fit-up and weld preparation precede final welding, performed to the project welding requirements.

Step6

Inspection and documentation

Quality control runs in-process, post-weld, and pre-shipment, and the records are compiled into one closeout package.

Step5

Delivery and erection support

Loads are sequenced to your erection plan, and we stay available for field questions through erection.

Lead times are driven by approval cycles, mill availability, connection complexity, and coating requirements, and every quote includes a dated production schedule.

Heavy Steel Fabrication for Industrial and Commercial Projects

Texas keeps adding manufacturing plants, distribution centers, energy infrastructure, and data centers, and fabrication capacity stays tight. American Katerra was built for this market: heavy steel fabrication for projects where sections are large, connections are engineered, and the tolerance for schedule slip is zero. Typical project types include warehouses and distribution centers, manufacturing and process facilities, energy and utility structures, data centers, and commercial buildings, each with different drivers our estimating and detailing teams plan around. If your project sits outside these categories, send us the drawings anyway.

How to Choose a Structural Steel Fabrication Partner

Proposals tend to look similar on the first page: a tonnage figure, unit rates, a date. The differences that decide how the package actually runs are elsewhere: who owns the detailing model, whether quality exists as records or only as claims, how material traceability is handled, whether the schedule has milestones or just a promise, and how submittals and RFIs are managed. These are fair tests for any fabricator, including us. Each of those five checks deserves a deeper look when you are comparing bids, and we are glad to show you how we answer them: send us your drawings and judge the response.

Quality Management Audit Image

Quality Management That Survives an Audit

Quality claims are easy to make and expensive to verify, so we keep ours specific: documented inspection checkpoints, named responsibility at each stage, and records generated as the work happens. Inspection runs three times on every order, in-process, post-weld, and pre-shipment, and mill test reports, weld inspection records, and dimensional reports are compiled into a single closeout package keyed to piece marks. American Katerra is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). On request, we will walk your quality or procurement team through the system itself.

Lower-Carbon Steel, Documented

Reshoring and embodied carbon are reshaping U.S. steel procurement at the same time, and most fabricators treat the second as someone else’s problem. We treat it as part of the fabrication package. Through Green & Blue Carbon Steel™, we source lower-carbon steel and quantify the reduction against conventional supply: Life Cycle Assessment covers the fabricated product, and Greenhouse Gas reporting covers the supply chain behind it. For owners pursuing LEED credits or corporate carbon targets, the documentation arrives with the steel. Decarbonizing the steel supply chain is a core mission of our parent group, built into American Katerra since day one.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

FAQ Image

What information do you need for a fabrication quote?

Structural drawings, the steel specification sections, your target schedule, and delivery constraints. Preliminary drawings are workable for budgeting; we will state our assumptions clearly and refine the number as the design firms up.

What are your typical lead times?

Lead times depend on approval cycles, mill availability, and connection complexity, and we commit to a dated production schedule in every quote.

Can you support LEED or corporate carbon requirements?

Yes. Life Cycle Assessment, Greenhouse Gas reporting, and our Green & Blue Carbon Steel™ program are integrated into the fabrication workflow, and the documentation is generated from the same data used to produce your steel.

What areas do you serve?

We fabricate in San Antonio, Texas, and serve projects across the state, including Austin, Houston, and the Dallas and Fort Worth metroplex. For projects outside Texas, feasibility usually comes down to freight, so send the drawings and we will give you a straight answer.
