On March 5, 2025 in Japan, Ms. Sameen Khan, Senior Manager of SteelZewro at Climate Group, took the stage at the REvision2025 conference, hosted by Japan’s Renewable Energy Institute. This landmark event underscored a pivotal moment for Japan’s steel industry as it advances toward comprehensive decarbonization.
During a panel discussion alongside industry giants Nippon Steel and Tokyo Steel, Ms. Khan highlighted the critical role of steel users in shaping the future of sustainable production. By creating strong market demand for green steel, end-users can send clear signals to steelmakers, encouraging the adoption of low-emission technologies and robust decarbonization strategies across Japan. Khan also celebrated a historic milestone: welcoming Yamaguchi Heavy Industries, our parent company, as the first Japanese member of SteelZero, a move with global implications for the steel sector’s sustainability efforts.
What is SteelZero initiated by Climate Group?
SteelZero is an initiative led by the Climate Group aimed at accelerating the transition to a net-zero steel industry. It brings together steel users, producers, and other stakeholders to drive demand for low-emission, sustainable steel. The initiative encourages companies to commit to procuring 100% net-zero steel by 2050, with interim targets to ensure progress. By fostering collaboration and sending clear market signals, SteelZero supports the decarbonization of the steel sector, a critical step toward achieving global climate goals.
Amerikan Katerra Joined the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC)
We’re proud to announce our participation in the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC), reinforcing our unwavering commitment to driving decarbonization in the global steel industry. This collaboration positions us at the forefront of sustainable innovation.
The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) is an international coalition of steel producers and stakeholders focused on reducing carbon emissions in the steel industry. On August 2, 2023, the GSCC announced “the Steel Climate Standard,” a global framework for measuring and reporting CO2 emissions across the steel supply chain. This initiative aims to counter rival standards like ResponsibleSteel by promoting a unified approach to decarbonization. The GSCC, established in November 2022, seeks to align the industry with a 1.5°C climate scenario by 2050, emphasizing sustainable steel production through shared standards and best practices.
Beyond steel, Amerikan Katerra is making waves by empowering developing economies to take meaningful climate-positive action. Through strategic partnerships, we’re delivering measurable progress toward a just and sustainable future.
