Partnering for a Sustainable Future: Exploring Synergies with Nucor

During a recent roundtable discussion on steel and sustainability in Washington D.C., we had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Luke Johnson, SE, PE, Sustainability Supervisor at Nucor. His thoughtful insights and warm encouragement — shared after our conversation — led us to attend Nucor’s in-depth webinar on Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and sustainable steel. That experience sparked the ideas behind this post.

As global industries pivot toward carbon-conscious practices, partnerships are redefining what it means to build sustainably. Nucor has distinguished itself through the adoption of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology, a cleaner alternative to traditional Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOS) processes. While BOS production relies heavily on virgin materials and emits around 2.32 metric tons of CO₂ per ton of steel, Nucor’s EAF approach uses up to 99% recycled content, achieving an industry-leading emissions intensity of just 0.76 metric tons of CO₂ per ton—less than half the global average of 1.92.

Nucor’s sustainability strategy is its extensive use of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). These standardized documents quantify a product’s life cycle environmental impact across six key categories, including Global Warming Potential (GWP) and ozone depletion potential.

By the end of 2024, Nucor had released EPDs for 19 products across 55 facilities, with a roadmap to double this by 2025. This level of transparency supports developers, engineers, and architects seeking LEED certification or pursuing compliance with Buy Clean and other procurement legislation.
